1. A quarter of the market is chain-owned — and one company holds 10.9% of it alone
Of 10,663 suppliers, 2,785 (26.1%) operate under a national or regional chain. The remaining 7,878 are independent. Consolidation is concentrated at the top: the two largest groups together account for 16.6% of every welding supplier in the country.
| Group | Locations | Share of US |
|---|---|---|
| Airgas | 1,165 | 10.9% |
| Linde | 606 | 5.7% |
| Matheson | 238 | 2.2% |
| NuCO2 | 208 | 2.0% |
| Praxair | 100 | 0.9% |
| nexAir | 100 | 0.9% |
| Arc3 Gases | 69 | 0.6% |
| Roberts Oxygen | 66 | 0.6% |
2. Independents out-rate the chains by 0.24 stars
Across 5,620 suppliers carrying at least one Google review, independents average 4.44 stars (n=3,150) against 4.20 for chain-owned locations (n=2,470). The national average sits at 4.34.
The gap is small in absolute terms but consistent, and it runs against the assumption that scale buys better service in this category. We are reporting the correlation only — this data cannot tell you why, and rating counts differ substantially between the two groups.
3. The biggest welding states are among the worst served per capita
Texas and California hold the largest absolute counts, yet both fall below the national average of 31.9 suppliers per million residents. Density concentrates in rural, resource-heavy states instead.

Methodology & limitations
- Figures come from the WeldIndex directory as of August 2026: 10,663 US welding and industrial gas suppliers, compiled from public business listings and the companies' own websites.
- Ratings are Google review averages. Only the 5,620 businesses with at least one review are included in rating calculations, so rating figures cover roughly 52.7% of the directory.
- Per-capita figures use US Census Bureau resident population estimates and cover 50 states.
- Chain classification is based on brand ownership at the location level; a chain-owned branch counts as one location, not one company.
- This is a census of what we can verify, not a statistical sample. Suppliers with no public web presence are underrepresented, and coverage varies by region.
